Why catafalcul Is Trending Today?

Crin Antonescu, a former leader of the National Liberal Party in Romania, has launched a series of attacks, criticizing "basists" and "post-basists" who he describes as "resentful" for causing a scandal at the catafalque with state honors for the late Ion Iliescu. Antonescu, who previously campaigned for Iliescu in 2000, has expressed his disapproval of Nicușor Dan, the current mayor of Bucharest, for not attending the funeral. Despite their past political ties, Antonescu has been vocal in his criticism of Dan and the current administration.

Gigi Becali, following a 30-second pause beside Ion Iliescu's catafalque, humorously stated, "I'm going to Băsescu. I believe I'll be the one to bury him." Ionuț Moșteanu, however, did not attend Iliescu's funeral, with the Ministry of Administration and Interior sending a representative to the catafalque instead. Theodor Stolojan and Viorica Dăncilă were present at the catafalque, while Adrian Năstase, a former prime minister, also arrived to pay his respects. The funeral service began at Iliescu's catafalque, with Nicușor Dan notably absent from the ceremony. Nina Iliescu, the former First Lady, shared her thoughts at the catafalque where her late husband, Ion Iliescu, was lying in state at the Cotroceni Palace.
