Ronald Venetiaan, a prominent figure in Suriname's history, has passed away at the age of 89. He was widely respected as a man of principles and a beacon of moral leadership in the country. Venetiaan served as president of Suriname for two terms, from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2010. His contributions to the country's development and democracy were praised by various political parties and leaders, including the current president, Chan Santokhi, who described Venetiaan as a mentor. Despite the outpouring of support for a state funeral, Venetiaan's family has respectfully honored his wish for a private farewell. The Dutch royal family and the Dutch prime minister also paid their respects to the late former president.
