Senator Maria Basescu, also known as senatoarea, has been elected as the new leader of the Senate in Romania. She succeeds Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, who held the position for the past four years. Basescu, a member of the National Liberal Party, won the vote with 122 out of 136 valid votes. Her election comes amidst political tensions in the country, with the ruling Social Democratic Party boycotting the vote. Basescu has previously served as Romania's Minister of Regional Development and Public Administration.

The woman who attacked Senator POT Valentina Aldea with a stick has been placed under judicial control. She accused Aldea of having an affair with her husband, stating, "She is my husband's mistress. It's a continuous fight between her and me." Aldea confirmed the incident, saying she was beaten without reason in a parking lot in Bucharest.
