Tufan Erhürman, a social democrat, has been elected as the new President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), defeating the incumbent hardliner, Ersin Tatar. Erhürman, who is 51 years old and from the city of Lefkoşa, has previously served as the Prime Minister of KKTC. In his first statement, Erhürman emphasized that he will continue to defend the rights of KKTC and expressed that 'Türkiye' will be a priority in his foreign policy. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey congratulated Erhürman on his victory, stating that they will continue to support the rights of KKTC.
