Vlaai, a traditional Limburgish pastry, must be baked no earlier than the night before to be considered authentic Limburgse Vlaai. Consumers in Limburg prefer fresh vlaai, rejecting any that is more than six days old. The Dutch government has protected Limburgse vlaai as a regional product, ensuring it is sold fresh and not mass-produced by supermarkets. A bakery owner feared supermarkets would have to discard large quantities of vlaai due to the new regulation. However, a Dutch factory bakery's attempt to use the Limburgse vlaai name was rejected, preserving the product's regional identity.
